The association of diabetes mellitus and acute myocardial infarction in the development of atrial fibrillation.

  • CHIRILIUC Nadejda IMSP Institutul de Cardiologie

diabetes mellitus, acute myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic medical conditions and is an independent risk factor for both: acute myocardial infarction and the development of atrial fibrillation. Both, diabetes mellitus and acute myocardial infarction promote the development of a proinflammatory status and oxidative stress in the atrial tissue, these being a substrate of the development of atrial fibrosis, and consequently of atrial fibrillation.
