Abstract

To anticipate and adapt to recurring daily events driven by the earth’s rotation, organisms exhibit regulatory mechanisms designed to control homeostasis under different lighting conditions, called circadian rhythm (CR).The CR represents an endogenous biological network that coordinates 24-hour cycles at the genetic, biochemical, physiological, and behavioral levels. CR control systems transmit timing signals throughout the organism, with all internal processes exhibiting a daily maximum and minimum activity level managed through modulation of neurotransmission in critical neural structures.Knowing the daily variations of neurotransmitter activity in the central nervous system is essential in establishing effective neuroprotection mechanisms. This study summarizes current knowledge on the interplay between circadian rhythm, neurotransmitter fluctuations, and their impact on neuroprotection and mental health.
