Abstract

An impact analysis of the burden of cardiovascular disease in the Republic of Moldova was conducted in comparison with European Society of Cardiology member countries, which are classified according to income level, Moldova being ranked as a country with lower than average incomes. This analysis was carried out in accordance with the ESC Atlas of Cardiology. Despite much progress, CVD is still the leading cause of death, with more than 4 million deaths every year- around 47% of all deaths in Europe. Mortality due to cardiovascular diseases in the Republic of Moldova is constantly high, about 57-58% in recent years. With the aging population, CVD prevalence is expected to increase and often co-exist with other diseases, leading to multi-morbidity - a further challenge when seeking to assess and treat patients. CVD is the leading cause of premature mortality.Positive progress has been made in the evolution of diagnostic and treatment methods. However, the Republic of Moldova does not on an advantageous position over other ESC member countries. The data summarized in this article identify substantial differences between ESC member countries in terms of the number of cardiology professionals, the available infrastructure, and access to interventional and surgical cardiological procedures. Different countries have different health care systems, educational programs in cardiology and levels of health spending and of course a single approach does not clearly fit and is not possible. Finally, the improvement of insurance with certain diagnostic or therapeutic procedures should be encouraged in order to increase the quality of healthcare.
